Filing Mistakes and Solutions

Organizing FilesSometimes you just feel like you are drowning in papers, even in the digital age. From bills to medical records, papers keep piling up and your storage capacity is greatly overextended until you lose complete overview of papers that are actually important and should always be at hand.

These common filing mistakes play a role in organizing your paper chaos and can be easily remedied by yourself or with the help of a professional organizer:

Underestimating necessary amount and filing categories:

Before you stuff all papers in a folder, take the time to sort all papers by category (bills, invoices, taxes). You will organize your filing and gauge how much total filing space you will require; going furniture shopping will make sense with this knowledge.

Organizing Kids Artwork

Organizing Kids ArtworkEvery new creation your child expresses her artistic side with, bears both the promise of the next Jackson Pollock and at the same time a storage problem. You want to keep every one of them not only because you love them, but also because you show your child that you are proud and believe the artwork is very special. But your child will understand and often agree that it is okay to part with some of the work as long as you involve your child in the decision making process.

To keep the collected artwork well edited, current and manageable, review the stock regularly. Go through all drawings and other artwork midway through the school year and again at the end of the school year. Decide which pieces you and your child would like to display, which ones should be stored or sent as gifts and which ones can go. Get a large portfolio ready along with mailing tubes and your recycling bin. Once you have made a final decision on the contents of each of your four piles, consider the specifics:

The Organized Toy Box

Organize Kids ToysFor kids, it’s all fun and games until it is time to clean up. You have spent enough time negotiating the “clean your room” treaty, but still – after each play date, the toys, crayons, books and stuffed animals look like survivors in a war zone. You find yourself hopping on one foot after stepping on another piece of shrapnel, errr I mean toy, on your way to the bathroom at night. Keeping kids toys organized may seem like a never-ending task, but it doesn’t have to be. Toys can be easily categorized and bundled together, board games, soft toys, hard toys, arts and crafts, and so on.

Container Options

These days there are plenty of ways to keep toys organized other than the big wooden toy boxes we grew up with. Try fun boxes in different sizes that can be stacked. They should not be too big so kids can easily handle them and don’t stack more than two or three boxes so kids can easily pull out the bottom box. Clear boxes with drawers are great. Kids can see the contents of the box and will always know where to find the right toy without digging through all the toys and making a big mess. More importantly, they will know where to return them to. Baskets work great, and even zip lock bags for older kids that tend to have toys with a ton of small pieces.

Tips for Organizing Your Laundry Room

Organize LaundryLaundry is one of those never-ending chores. Once you have washed it all, neatly folded, sometimes pressed then placed it all in your closet and drawers, the fun starts all over again. But you can lessen the pain by organizing your laundry and your laundry room.

Supplies

The first step is to ensure a well stocked supply of laundry detergent, softener and dryer sheets. Nothing is more cumbersome than realizing you just ran out when you are in the middle of doing laundry. In our home we have a backup of each item, when we finish something we pull out the backup and write it on the grocery list so we are prepared the next time we run out.

Sorting

As a general habit, instead of sorting a large pile of dirty laundry each time right before you stick it all in the washer, think about sorting your laundry as you go. The whole family, even kids at a young age, can help keep dirty laundry sorted. Hampers with multiple compartments sometimes have the name of laundry that belongs in each hamper printed on it, so everybody can just throw their clothes in the appropriate hamper. If you can’t find such hampers, consider color coding them or using baskets in different colors. Younger children can be enticed with little rewards for pitching in. Be creative, you know the things they like…Keep your dry-cleaning items in a separate bag so that you can just grab it on your next trip to the dry cleaner without having to go through all your dirty laundry.

Garage Sales Tips to Get Organized

Now that spring is here, one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted items is to hold a garage sale. Garage sales are great for getting rid of almost any household item, whether it’s clothing, kitchen accessories or even old lawn mowers. People are always looking for great deals, and if you are a person that tends to keep things because you can see the good in the objects, even if they end up just piling up in your house, a garage or yard sale lets you know that the item will be used by someone, rather then just throwing it out. You are even helping the environment! And let’s face it, we could all use a little cash in our pockets.

Where do you start and how do you decide what to keep and what to sort out?

Pick any room or your basement to begin. Start going through all closets or cabinets in that room. You have to be merciless and it works best if you work with somebody in your family to give each other support for decision making. The easiest way to part with old belongings is to ask yourself when was the last time you used or wore an item. Decide what your time threshold is, over a year is a very reasonable time frame. Have pricing stickers in your hand as you sort through everything so you can simply slap one on and put it in the box or bag to be set up on garage sale day. Once you have gathered everything you no longer want or need, do not revisit, once it is in the box it stays there.
